If you have a wood structure such as a log, shake or plank building or home, deck, fence, gazebo or even a childs' playset, Hydro Scrub offers wood restoration services to restore the natural beauty of the wood with a thorough washing, brightening and staining.  For all types of wood surfaces, we offer the following services:

  • routine wood cleaning,
  • finish stripping,
  • sanding, and
  • staining / sealing or waterproofing services.

Hydro Scrub's wood restoration service is offerred for all types of wood, including pressure treated, cedar, redwood, and exotics (e.g., mahagony, IPE).

Our typical wood restoration process consists of three steps:

Step 1.  Cleaning with own blend of cleaning agents, we remove mold, mildew, algae, embedded dirt, and decayed/weathered wood fibers,

Wood restoration of a redwood deck. One half brightened with acid, the other not. Allentown, Lehigh County, PA Exammple of a cleaned redwood deck. One half has been brightened with oxalic acid, the other half has not. No finish has been applied to either half.

Step 2. Brightening/neutralizing after cleaning by applying a weak oxalic acid solution to neutralize any residual cleaning solution and to "brighten" the wood surface in the case of redwood and cedar.  Wood cleaning solutions are general alkaline in terms of pH.  Leaving any alkaline residues on the surface of the wood greatly affects the longevity of oil based stains.  Not brightening redwood or cedar causes redwood to have a dulled out, muddy brown, or black appearance, while cedar may result in a washed out brown or tan color.  Without brigtneing, the vibrant color which drew you to use redwood or cedar wood in the first place will not be achieved.

Step 3.  Finishing with either a water based or oil based clear, transparent, semi-solid or solid color stain.  While Hydro Scrub can apply any kind of finish material to your wood surface, be advised that there are some finishes we simply will not apply and refuse to work with.  Also, we do have some strong opinions on what finish products should be used.  Our opinions are based on 15 plus years of experience dealing with exterior wood surfaces.... we know what works, what lasts, what is "easy" to maintain, and most importantly what does not create a problem down the road.

Generally speaking, if you already have an existing finish material on your wood structure, it is best advised to keep using that same finish material.  It is important that you know what finish material was last used on your wood structure.  You can put a water based finish on top of a water or oil based finish, but you can only put an oil based finish ontop of another oil based finish material.  Oil based material cannot be applied on water based material.  Peeling and lifting of the top coat will result.

While existing finishes can be removed, the process is very expensive and usually requires chemical stripping (which can impact surrounding vegetation), neutralizing the chemically stripped wood, setting all screws/nails below the surface, physically sanding the wood, and then finishing the wood.  Many customers are shocked by the amount of labor and the resulting charges that go into stripping a wood structure, and usually, once they realize the process and associated costs, often change the direction of their project.  All wood stripping projects conducted by Hydro Scrub are performed on a Time and Material (T&M) basis...we will NOT provide a firm price quote for wood stripping projects....the process is simply too variable.
